240
Kida Hiroyuki Kutani Ware Celadon Teabowl and Rock Glass (Selected for the Nitten Exhibition, Awarded Minister of Education Prize) #240

This is a celadon chawan (tea bowl) by Hiroyuki Kida (1944-), a modern Kutani ware master whose works have received numerous top honors, including the Nitten Special Selection and the Minister of Education Award, and whose pieces are permanently held by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This piece has the beautiful proportions of a matcha bowl that fits comfortably in the hand, and our shop proudly proposes it as a premium Japanese craft rock glass for slowly enjoying aged sake that has matured into a rich amber color over time, or carefully selected whiskey with large ice cubes. Its traditional shape, with a wide mouth and moderate depth, significantly enhances the rich aroma of the poured liquor by allowing it to interact with the air, and when held, it directly conveys the smooth texture and pleasant weight characteristic of Kutani porcelain. The attempt to merge the traditional chawan, which possesses an overwhelming presence as an art object and is deeply rooted in Japanese tea ceremony culture, with the modern enjoyment of luxury spirits will surely provide a luxurious experience for entertaining overseas collectors and special guests with the highest form of Japanese hospitality.

The artist, Hiroyuki Kida, was born in Hachiman, Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1944. As the third-generation successor of Kida Seito, a renowned family of Kutani ware three-dimensional sculptors, he inherited the highly precise modeling techniques passed down through generations. Furthermore, not content with the scope of traditional crafts, he completed his studies at the Government Industrial Research Institute, Nagoya, a national research institution, acquiring scientific and modern ceramic technology. He has established a truly rare, completely handmade style in the world of Kutani ware, overseeing every step from mold making and shaping to meticulous overglaze painting himself. He has achieved brilliant results on major stages both domestically and internationally, including receiving the Nitten Special Selection, the Minister of Education Award, being selected for the Faenza International Ceramics Competition in Italy, and winning the Chunichi Grand Prize. His extraordinary modeling sense and technique have been officially recognized as national art pieces, purchased by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and permanently housed as part of the public collection of the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, among other accolades, widely proving their cultural asset value. He continues to be a leading figure who relentlessly pursues the art of pottery, and complete pieces bearing the artist's original signature on the box, which circulate in the market, possess extremely high rarity due to the lack of new supply.

One of the most highly regarded aspects of Hiroyuki Kida's pottery is his advanced glaze color control technology, backed by years of research. Upon careful examination of this piece, as can be seen in the accompanying images, it stands out as an exceptionally well-executed work among his celadon pieces, a masterpiece full of artistic flavor. The beautiful glaze covering the entire vessel achieves a vivid and deeply clear coloration reminiscent of the highest quality jade, possessing an incredibly high, captivating transparency. Furthermore, as can be meticulously observed in the detailed photographs, a splendid network of crackle, like finely woven ice cracks, spreads beautifully and seamlessly from the inner and outer walls of the vessel all the way to the deep interior. The thickness of this transparent glaze and the countless layers of fine cracks within it allow light to pass through, creating a three-dimensional visual effect as if a mystical natural landscape unfolds deep within the vessel when gazed upon. When sake is poured and ice floats within, the amber liquid of aged sake, the jade color, and the sparkling crackle will harmonize beautifully within the vessel, evoking the highest level of sophistication.

This piece is perfectly accompanied by physical evidence that confirms its authenticity and the artist's distinct style. On the base of the vessel, within the carefully finished foot, a clear square seal "Hiroyuki" is engraved, indicating it is an authentic work by the artist. Furthermore, the lid of the dedicated wooden box, which shows careful preservation, bears the artist's handwritten inscription "Celadon Tea Bowl" on the front and "Kutani Hiroyuki" with a square seal on the inside. In addition, a dedicated yellow wrapping cloth beautifully stamped with the artist's seal, and a detailed artist's profile booklet (shiori) are all included in excellent condition. This is a complete piece in very good condition, free from chips or cracks, and represents an asset of undeniable value as a supreme Japanese craft piece, extremely difficult to encounter overseas. Please note that the fine crackle patterns visible on the surface of the vessel are a traditional, natural characteristic unique to celadon, known as "kannyu," and are not damage from later impact or wear. Please feel free to pour your drink and enjoy its beautiful appearance. We invite you to enjoy the supreme beauty cultivated by Japanese tradition in your own hands.

Artist: Hiroyuki Kida (1944-)

Artist's Major Activities: [1944] Born in Kaga Hachiman, Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, completed studies at the Government Industrial Research Institute, Nagoya.
