248
Artist in the Collections of the National Crafts Museum, Tokyo and the Corning Museum of Glass (USA) | Denji Takeuchi | Guinomi Sake Cup in Colored Glass with Gold Leaf Band | Japanese-Style Shot Glass #248

This is a guinomi (sake cup) by the glass artist Denji Takeuchi. The tomobako (the wooden box signed by the artist) bears an ink inscription reading "Denji" together with a red seal, and an incised signature appears on the underside of the foot. A shiori (the artist's biographical leaflet) and a wrapping cloth accompany the piece. Our shop proposes this small drinking vessel as a Japanese-style shot glass for savoring aged spirits and whisky a little at a time.

Takeuchi was born in 1934 in Onoda City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and died in 2001. These dates are taken from the collection records of the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art, which give his name using the modern simplified form of the first character of his given name. According to the accompanying leaflet, Takeuchi joined Sasaki Glass in 1958 and stepped down as a director of the company in 1993. During his time with the company, he lived in New York from 1962 to 1963 and in Hamburg until 1970. In 1968, he won a gold prize at the International Crafts Exhibition in Utrecht, the Netherlands. In 1978, he received the International Grand Prize of Spain at a design competition in Valencia, an honor he received again in 1981 and 1987. In 1979, he was awarded the Kunii Kitaro Prize for Industrial Crafts as the representative of Sasaki Glass's design work. He served as vice president and as chairman of the board of the Japan Glass Artcrafts Association, and taught at the Kanazawa Utatsuyama Crafts Workshop and the Toyama Institute of Glass Art.

Takeuchi's work is held by museums in Japan and abroad. The Corning Museum of Glass in the United States holds a set of three colorless cut-glass glasses made in 1978. According to the museum's records, the set was exhibited there in 1979, which corresponds to the leaflet's account of his selection for the "New Glass" exhibition and the acquisition of his work by the museum. Takeuchi is also among the artists featured in New Glass Review 5, the annual published by the museum in 1984. In Japan, the National Crafts Museum (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) holds five of his works: Crystal glass, whisky decanter and glasses (1978); Composition No. 45 (1982), a sculptural work made by casting and cutting; Crystal glass, ice pail (1990); Crystal glass, whisky glasses (1990); and Crystal glass, glasses for on the rocks (1991). That four of these five works are vessels for drink shows that such vessels were one of the central concerns of his work. The Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art also holds his work. The leaflet further lists institutions including the Toledo Museum of Art (USA), the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft (Denmark), and the Victoria and Albert Museum (UK) as holding his work.

From the 1980s onward, he exhibited in the "Contemporary Glass" exhibition at the National Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto and Tokyo) in 1980, the 2nd World Glass Now exhibition at the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in 1985, and "300 Years of Japanese Glass" at the Suntory Museum of Art in 1986, among others. He also held a three-person exhibition with Kyohei Fujita and Naoto Yokoyama in Paris in 1987. In 1995, he was invited to exhibit in "Contemporary Japanese Crafts" at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Most of Takeuchi's works in museum collections are made of colorless crystal glass and finished by mold-blowing, cutting, or casting. This piece, by contrast, reveals another side of his work, composed of colored glass, gold-colored leaf, and a matte surface. Its full, rounded body opens gently outward toward the rim, and a small disc-shaped foot sits beneath. The upper half is wisteria violet and the lower half pale rose, the two colors melting into each other as if softly blurred, with streaks of deep purple flowing through the violet area. A band of gold-colored leaf encircles the middle of the body; the leaf is broken into a fine, net-like pattern of cracks, and the edges of the band undulate irregularly. Both the interior and exterior have a matte texture, and fine bubbles are dispersed throughout the glass. Viewed from above, the leaf on the body shows through from the inside as a ring. A single small dark purple dot can be seen near the rim. As the forming method, the material of the leaf, and the method used to create the matte finish cannot be determined with certainty from external appearance, we refrain from stating them.

The period of production has been estimated from the accompanying leaflet. The home telephone number printed on it is in the eight-digit Tokyo format used from January 1, 1991. The postal code is in the three-digit format used before Japanese postal codes were changed to seven digits in February 1998. The final entry in the biography is dated 1995. On these grounds, we have determined that the leaflet was printed between 1995 and early 1998. As this piece has been passed down together with the leaflet, we estimate that it was made in the same period.

Artist: Denji Takeuchi (1934–2001)

Selected Career Highlights: [1958] Joined Sasaki Glass (stepped down as a director in 1993); [1968] Gold prize, International Crafts Exhibition, Utrecht (the Netherlands); [1978] International Grand Prize of Spain, design competition in Valencia (awarded again in 1981 and 1987); [1979] Selected for the "New Glass" exhibition at the Corning Museum of Glass (USA), with work acquired by the museum; received the Kunii Kitaro Prize for Industrial Crafts; [1980] Invited to exhibit in "Contemporary Glass," National Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto and Tokyo); [1982] Invited to exhibit in "Modern Japanese Glass Crafts," National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, with work acquired by the museum; [1985] Exhibited in the 2nd World Glass Now exhibition, Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art; [1986] Invited to exhibit in "300 Years of Japanese Glass," Suntory Museum of Art; [1987] Three-person exhibition with Kyohei Fujita and Naoto Yokoyama, Paris; [1994] Glory Award in the Arts and Culture category from Onoda City; [1995] Invited to exhibit in "Contemporary Japanese Crafts," Victoria and Albert Museum (London)

Museum Collections: National Crafts Museum (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo), Corning Museum of Glass (USA), Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art

Period of Production: c. 1995–1998 (estimated from the printing period of the accompanying leaflet)

Condition: Very good (no chips, no cracks)

Accessories: Tomobako (wooden box signed by the artist), wrapping cloth, and shiori (biographical leaflet) included

Material: Glass (colored glass, gold-colored leaf)

Dimensions: Height approx. 6.0 cm, Rim diameter approx. 5.5 cm

Notice: All items offered by our shop, even those that are new and unused, were produced a very long time ago and are therefore listed as pre-owned.
