After graduating from the Department of History, Faculty of Letters at Ryukoku University in 1970, Mr. Yasutaka Shimizu entered full-scale pottery making under his father in 1971. Beginning with his first selection at the 19th Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition in 1972, he won the Kinki Branch Chairman's Award and the Nikkei Encouragement Award for three consecutive years at the Kinki Branch Japan Art Crafts Association Exhibition, as well as the Matsushita Award (the highest accolade), leading to his nomination as a Regular Member and Special Member of the Japan Art Crafts Association. Basing his pottery practice at Horai Kiln in Adogawa-cho, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, his works are preserved permanently in collections such as the Shiga Museum of Art, Kyoto Prefectural Kyoto Institute Library and Archives, and Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum. Over a warm, semi-matte white glaze covering the entire vessel, band patterns in mountain-range and wave-crest formations are applied in three to four overlapping tiers around the perimeter using a specialized glaze containing iron oxide and composite minerals. Due to high-temperature shifts during firing, these wavy lines transcend flat brushwork; the glaze undergoes three-dimensional shrinkage, crawling (chijire), and crystallization, giving rise to a highly complex yohen texture with depth and shadowing that transitions from dark brown to dark green and grayish white. Furthermore, this crawling yohen wave motif extends around the interior upper rim (mikomi) as well as the exterior, creating a visual harmony where the liquid surface meets the wave patterns when poured. Standing approximately 8.0 cm in height with a mouth diameter of approximately 10.5 cm in a refined, rounded bowl shape, a clear \"Yasu\" (保) seal mark representing Mr. Yasutaka Shimizu's design is stamped on the side of the rustic unglazed foot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-path-to-node=\"11\"\u003eRegarding the period of production, taking the final record on the accompanying ceramic lineage leaflet listing his selection at the 30th Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition in September 1983 (Showa 58), alongside the print date on the lower left reading February 1984 (Showa 59) as solid evidence, it is estimated to be an authentic work crafted at Horai Kiln circa 1983 to 1984 (Showa 58 to Showa 59). With Mr. Yasutaka Shimizu's passing in 2022, the production of new works has completely ceased, establishing its value as a master's legacy legitimately inheriting the techniques of a Living National Treasure. The vessel itself has no cracks or chips, maintaining extremely good condition in its white glaze texture, yohen wave coloration, and crawled glaze surface condition.
