Share
As Japanese craftsmanship gains attention around the world, Kagami Crystal is often mentioned alongside Japanese whiskey. Founded in 1934, it has a long history and is a brand at the pinnacle of Japanese glass craftsmanship, with its delicate yet elegant designs that are appealing to whiskey lovers around the world. In this article, we will introduce the background and characteristics of Kagami Crystal, its relationship with Japanese whiskey, as well as how it differs from other manufacturers and its global position.
Founding year and founder's vision
Kagami Crystal was founded by Kozo Kagami in 1934. At the time, there was no such thing as full-scale crystal glass manufacturing in Japan, and Mr. Kagami had a strong desire to make this possible.
Training abroad and introducing new technologies
In 1927, Kagami went to study at the Stuttgart School of Arts and Crafts in Germany, where he learned engraving and glass cutting techniques from renowned professor Wilhelm von Eiff. The fusion of the best of Western glass art he absorbed there with Japanese aesthetic sense became the foundation of what would later become Kagami Crystal.
Founding Opportunity and Philosophy
After returning to Japan, Kagami realized the importance of crystal glass manufacturing in Japan. In particular, there was an urgent need to manufacture high-quality Japanese-made glassware for gifts in response to requests from the Imperial Household Agency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He believed in manufacturing that combined Japanese sensibility with Western technology, and founded Kagami Crystal as Japan's first factory specializing in full-scale crystal glass.
Product Features
Kagami Crystal's products are characterized by their highly transparent lead-free crystal glass, precise cutting techniques, and designs that blend Japanese and Western styles. The craftsmen still work by hand, putting their heart and soul into each and every piece. The thin, uniform mouth of the glass brings out the aroma of whiskey, which is why it is highly regarded by whiskey lovers.
Changes in product style
When the company was first established, it mainly produced giftware for the Imperial Household Agency, but from the 1960s onwards, it also developed modern designs with an eye towards exporting to Europe and the US. In the 1990s, it focused on barware and tableware, and has now evolved into a style that embodies the "fusion of tradition and innovation". In recent years, it has also introduced contemporary Art Deco lines and minimalist designs with an eye towards the global market.
Positioning in the market compared to other domestic crystal manufacturers
In Japan, other than Kagami Crystal, there are Tajima Glass, Sugahara Glass, HOYA Crystal (some brands are still in production). However, among them, Kagami Crystal is a representative of the high-end market, being a purveyor to the Imperial Household Agency and being used as a gift for state guests. Its high quality and classical elegance, as well as technical capabilities that are on par with top overseas brands, make it a perfect match for the high-quality image of Japanese whiskey.
Japanese whiskey that adopted Kagami Crystal
Kagami Crystal also has a strong relationship with Japanese whiskey, and in particular, custom decanters and glasses made by Kagami Crystal have been used for Suntory Imperial Whisky, launched in 1968, as well as the more recent Hibiki 30 Year Old and Hibiki Blender's Choice.
These are highly valued as collector's items, and are a source of pride for the world as containers that combine beauty and flavor. Other brands such as Nikka Whisky and Venture Whisky (Ichiro's Malt) also use them in limited edition models.
In addition, Kagami Crystal was used in the bottles of many other high-end Japanese whiskeys, including SUNTORY whiskey and NIKKA whiskey, as shown in the image above.
Comparison with overseas brands and issues
There are many crystal brands in the world with impeccable histories and capabilities, such as France's Baccarat, Saint-Louis, and Daum. These brands have established an overwhelming presence in the world through their artistic quality and brand power, and are also highly regarded for their art value. On the other hand, Kagami Crystal embodies a Japanese aesthetic sense that places more emphasis on functionality and practicality, and holds a unique position in the sense that it is a "work of art that can be enjoyed by using it."
However, Kagami is still not well known in overseas markets. Going forward, we need to spread the unique appeal of Kagami to the world through our ability to communicate our brand story, innovative designs, and even collaborations with overseas bartenders and high-end restaurants.
Overseas Market and Evaluation
Kagami Crystal has been highly praised by overseas enthusiasts and bartenders for its beauty and functionality. It is also used in top restaurants and bars in the United States and France, and together with Japanese whiskey, it has formed a brand image of "Japanese elegance."
Kagami Crystal is not just a glass craft, but an embodiment of Japanese culture, technology, and aesthetics. Its high affinity with Japanese whiskey enhances its value as an "experience" in terms of both taste and visual appeal, and it will continue to fascinate lovers around the world.
