Glengoyne Distillery, located on the border between the Highlands and Lowlands, is considered one of Scotland's most beautiful distilleries. This exceptionally rare Glengoyne 12 Year Old, introduced to the Japanese market before the revision of the Liquor Tax Law in the late 1980s, is from the "Special Grade" era. The specifications of "75cl (750ml) / 43% ABV" engraved on the label, along with the import seal from Showa Bussan LLC (Naha City), the Okinawan importer at the time, truly speak to its historical value as a symbol of Japan's golden age of whisky.
During this time, Glengoyne was produced and bottled by Lang Brothers Limited, run by the founding Lang family. Glengoyne's greatest feature is its traditional "no-peat" production method. By drying the malt without using peat and using only hot air, the pure sweetness of the raw barley itself and an astonishingly clean, fruity aroma are brought out. Furthermore, the raw spirit obtained through "ultra-slow distillation," said to be the slowest method in Scotland, is aged for a minimum of 12 years in carefully selected, top-quality sherry casks, resulting in a deep amber color and rich flavor.
Its flavor is even more substantial and classical than the current bottle. Poured into the glass, the rich fruit aroma of ripe apples and dried apricots spreads, followed gradually by toasty notes of honey and freshly baked toast. The 43% alcohol content has evolved into an astonishingly smooth wine through many years of bottle aging, and on the palate, the warmth of dark chocolate and spices from the sherry casks lingers on in a long, elegant finish. Among aficionados, this "Grand Cru Lang Era" bottle is highly regarded as a "special bottle" that differs from the refined style of modern Glengoyne, offering a more powerful and energetic barley flavor and luxurious sherry flavor.
The black medallion that proudly adorns the neck of the bottle, reading "12 Years Old," and the illustration at the bottom of the label depicting the idyllic scenery surrounding the distillery, symbolize the rich craftsmanship and pride of the time. In exceptionally good condition, with little fading on the label and a well-maintained liquid level, this bottle is a historical heritage for collectors and a bottle that promises a supreme experience for enthusiasts. It is truly a valuable collection piece that conveys to the present day the essence of an era when Scotch whisky was a "special luxury item."
