We are pleased to present an extremely rare early bottle from The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), a pioneering independent bottler distributed in the late 1980s. This historic cask-strength single malt from the prestigious Glenlivet, assigned the distillery code "2" by SMWS, was distilled and casked in 1971, aged for 18 years, and bottled in September 1989.

While SMWS bottles are typically labeled "2.XX," combining the distillery code and the series number indicating the order of bottling, this bottle retains the original designation from shortly after the distillery's founding in 1983, before this rule was strictly enforced. This style, featuring only the identification number "2" prominently displayed in the center of the label instead of the distillery name (Glenlivet), symbolizes founder Pip Hills' revolutionary philosophy of encouraging people to enjoy the flavor of the contents without being bound by preconceived notions of the brand. At the time, it was highly unusual for a renowned distillery like Glenlivet to bottle a single cask without naming its own whiskey. This bottle, born during the formation of the SMWS identity that continues to this day, is a valuable documentary treasure.

The volume is 750ml, boasting a cask-strength alcohol content of 59.5%. Having spent 18 years in casks and over 35 years since bottling, this whisky is packed with a rich, multi-layered flavor unmatched by current Glenlivet whiskies. Through its long aging and gradual transformation in the bottle, the high alcohol content has become surprisingly smooth and refined, resulting in a long, lingering finish with notes of ripe fruit and honey, as well as the elegant floral notes that are the hallmark of Speyside malt.

Bottled during the golden age of whisky in the 1980s and available only to early members of the Society, this Code 2 bottle is a truly exquisite collectible piece that goes beyond mere whisky and embodies the passion of the pioneers who elevated single malt to global acclaim.
