We introduce a genuine vintage craft by Sonoe Hisaodo (art name: Minehisa), who boasted the highest level of overglaze enamel techniques in Okawa-cho, Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, during the golden age of Kutani ware in the Showa era. Although the studio is now defunct and will never produce new items again, we propose this phoenix-patterned sake cup, a traditional Japanese vessel, as the ultimate shot glass for elegantly enjoying amber-colored aged sake or mature Japanese whisky straight.

Sonoe Hisaodo's most highly acclaimed technique lies not in the realm of modern art for public exhibition awards, but in the craftsmanship of practical overglaze enameling, refined to the extreme to delight the user's five senses. At its core is the sophisticated aesthetic of "Ninsei-utsushi," which emulates the brilliant colored enamel world of the master craftsman Nonomura Ninsei of Kyoto, combined with the "aka-e kinsai" technique of overlaying pure gold paste onto finely detailed overglaze red painting.

A close professional examination of the attached product's design reveals that Sonoe Hisaodo's signature superlative technique is expressed with flawless precision. On the surface of the vessel, the phoenix, a symbol of eternal prosperity and good fortune in the East, is vividly depicted with hair-thin, uniform red lines. From the smooth curves of the phoenix's tail feathers, the overlapping of each individual feather, to the depiction of the auspicious clouds surrounding it, the extreme concentration of a skilled painter from that era, who held their breath with every brushstroke, is evident in a visual rhythm. Furthermore, the lavish gold embellishment applied over the red painting is not a gaudy, cheap glitter, but harmonizes with the elegant white porcelain body, creating a noble three-dimensionality and depth. It emits a calculated beauty that reveals various expressions depending on the angle of the light.

This work is not by an artist who has left a brilliant record of awards in official art directories such as the Nitten Exhibition or the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition. However, that is precisely the proudest aspect of craftsmanship in Japanese traditional crafts. The genuine lineage of uncrowned artisans who silently honed their skills in production areas and satisfied high-end Japanese restaurants and discerning patrons during the era when "Japan Kutani" swept the world, breathes fully within this small vessel.

Since the workshop itself no longer exists, individuals in such good condition, with the advanced gold-painting technique of the time preserved perfectly, are extremely rare. Pour top-grade whisky or aged sake, born from the accumulation of time, into this vessel while appreciating the exquisite ceramic texture that clings to your fingertips, something that glass can't offer. At that moment, the red and gold phoenix patterns applied both inside and outside the vessel vividly resonate through the refraction of the liquid, providing an intellectual tasting experience reserved only for its owner. Precisely because its name does not appear on the grand stage of history, it is a supreme piece that allows one to casually incorporate the pinnacle of pure technique into daily life and enjoy the true pleasure of art collecting—appreciating the ultimate beauty of utility in the palm of one's hand.
