Highlighting the traditional techniques and rustic clay character of Shigaraki in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture—counted as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns—this is an anonymous set of three cylindrical free cups of Shigaraki ware. Formed into an exquisitely palm-fitting, elongated size with a mouth diameter of approximately 6.4 cm–6.5 cm and a height of approximately 9.7–9.9 cm, the subtle hand-crafted distortions and warpage impart unique shadows and warmth to the vessel bodies. Our shop presents this set to the global market not only for daily tea use, but also as superb Japanese beer cups (beer mugs/tumblers) whose near-un-glazed-like glaze surface and minute texture generate fine, creamy foam, as well as versatile Japanese craft free cups (sake vessels) for quietly savoring the rich aroma and flavor of amber aged sake, matured whisky, or authentic shochu over large ice cubes.
Observing the details of this work clearly reveals a powerful expression woven by the coarse clay texture rich in silica sand and feldspar granules characteristic of Shigaraki ware, alongside a generous application of milky-white feldspar glaze (white glaze). The feldspar glaze enveloping the entire vessel forms a dynamic scenery of "flowing glaze" dripping during high-temperature firing, with fine crackles (kannyu) densely running across the entire glaze surface. Furthermore, brown iron spots and black dots exuded onto the surface due to iron in the clay during high-temperature vitrification, along with the minute texture of stone bursts (ishi-haze) where melted feldspar granules are exposed, spread richly from the exterior down to the inner bottom, constructing a natural landscape beyond intentional design. Near the base down to the foot ring (tatami-tsuki), irregular carving (frill-like wave carving) is applied, while the unglazed clay on the back of the foot ring reveals the rustic clay texture and melted feldspar marks unique to Shigaraki. Each of the three cups exhibits subtly different dripping patterns of feldspar glaze and appearance of iron spots, elevating its aesthetic value as a unique handcrafted item. The pottery walls with moderate thickness offer excellent heat and cold retention, allowing one to enjoy both the quality foam retention when pouring beer and the comfortable thermal sensation felt in the hand.
Regarding the production period, although unknown, there is a possibility that these pieces were created from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s. This was an era in Japanese contemporary ceramic art when the shaping of beer cups, free cups, and tumblers for enjoying beer, shochu, and aged sake became immensely popular, establishing a style that elevated traditional wood-firing techniques and flowing feldspar glazes into modern lifestyle ceramics. The dynamic carving techniques near the foot ring, along with the crackle and flowing glaze expressions, also strongly reflect the characteristics of contemporary Shigaraki crafts from this period. Although there are no markings indicating the artist or accessories such as a dedicated wooden box (Tomobako), the vessels themselves have no cracks or chips, maintaining extremely good condition in both glaze coloration and texture.
