Ballantine's from this era are said to have a much higher quality malt and peaty aroma than current products. The complex, rich aroma spreads, with a refined sweetness reminiscent of burnt vanilla, honey, and ripe pear, and a subtle hint of salt. The palate is surprisingly gentle and mellow, with no lingering aftertaste. It features a creamy flavor and a deep, penetrating maltiness, a result of long aging. The finish is characterized by a gentle, lingering smokiness, typical of blends from this era.
