This work, a wax-cast silver blown glass sake cup, is a culmination of the techniques of Living National Treasure Kitamura Shinichi. It is an extremely rare masterpiece that beautifully combines the completely different materials and techniques of metalwork and glass craftsmanship, demonstrating the depth of his research.

Kitamura Shinichi is a metalworker born in 1952, and in 2019 was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property of "Wax-mold Casting." This sake cup is an exquisite work of art crafted using traditional techniques. Because silver and glass are metals with vastly different melting points and thermal expansion rates, the process of completely integrating the two requires extremely advanced skills, carrying the risk of bursting or cracking due to thermal shock. This piece overcomes this challenge with an ingenious structure, in which glass is blown into a silver tree-like framework to form an integrated whole. The silver decoration features an organic texture with countless holes and a powerful, undulating tree trunk-like shape, creating a fantastical beauty.

This work is believed to be an ambitious piece created around 2000, when Kitamura reached the peak of his creative career, in which he pursued the fusion of techniques and the pinnacle of decorativeness. The silver carving, with its delicate shape reminiscent of growing branches and leaves, evokes both the vitality of nature and tranquil beauty. When sake is poured into the vessel, light reflects through the intricate gaps in the silver, creating a unique, tranquil glow. The expression of this light changes over time, casting various shadows depending on the viewing angle. Another major attraction of this work is that it allows one to appreciate the sophisticated craftsmanship of a Living National Treasure in an everyday sake vessel. This fusion of intricate silver motifs and glass is rare among Kitamura's works, making it a valuable collectible worthy of exceptional acclaim for both its artistic and technical merit.
