Distributed in the late 1980s, Yamazaki 12 Year Old Pure Malt Whisky, Special Grade, 760ml, 43%
This Suntory Pure Malt Whisky Yamazaki 12 Year Old is a monumental bottle that marked the beginning of Yamazaki, born in 1984 to commemorate Suntory's 60th anniversary of whisky production, and paved the way for the history of Japanese single malt whisky. The "Special Grade Whisky" notation at the bottom of the label and the standard size of 760ml at the time indicate that this is an extremely rare early distribution bottle, produced in the short period between its launch in 1984 and the abolition of grading due to the revision of the Liquor Tax Law in 1989.
This whisky was brought to the world by Keizo Saji, the second Master Blender at the time, with the unwavering determination to "create a single malt that represents Japan," and it was literally made using only the finest malts selected from the vast stockpiles that Suntory has built up over the years. To solidify the brand's reputation, the initial batches immediately after release were said to have been generously vatted with malts that had been aged for over 20 years, far exceeding the 12 years stated on the label, and the depth and complexity of its flavor put it in a league of its own compared to current products.
The ink lettering of "Yamazaki" adorning the bottle was adopted as a tribute to the chief blender at the time, a pioneer who poured his passion into whisky making, and together with the gold cap seal, it exudes the pride and dignity of Japan's first authentic single malt. Even after nearly half a century, the sparkling amber liquid is still condensed with the rich aroma of dried fruit from sherry casks and the noble scent reminiscent of aloeswood, unique to Mizunara oak casks, boasting an overwhelming level of perfection that should be called a treasure left behind from Japan's golden age of whisky.
