More than 60 years after the distillery was built in 1923, Suntory launched the Yamazaki brand in 1984 as "Japan's leading single malt." This rare vintage bottle is of Suntory Pure Malt Whisky Yamazaki 12 Year Old, which was in circulation from the mid-1990s until its 2004 renewal, following the abolition of grade classifications following the 1989 revision of the Liquor Tax Act. This bottle from this era, when bottle volume was standardized to the international standard of 750ml and the "Special Grade" label no longer appeared on the label, captures the brilliance of the transitional period when Yamazaki made the leap from a domestic brand to the global brand "YAMAZAKI."

The Yamazaki 12 Year Old, when it was labeled "Pure Malt," is known for its extremely luxurious and substantial composition of malts, even compared to the single malts currently on the market. At the time, there was more malt stock than there is now, and in order to establish the brand's reputation, malts aged for much longer than the stated 12 years were lavishly vatted as a secret ingredient. In particular, the Mizunara oak cask malts that define Yamazaki's individuality and the sherry cask malts that give it its deep richness are of exceptionally high quality, and the blender's obsession with the "purity" of 100% aged malt is embodied in every drop.

Its aroma is even more powerful than today's Yamazaki, beginning with rich dried fruit and chocolate-like sweetness derived from sherry casks, followed by a noble oriental aroma reminiscent of aloeswood and sandalwood, characteristic of Mizunara oak casks, which lingers elegantly for a long time. The 43% alcohol content maximizes the potential of the raw spirit, and its silky smooth mouthfeel, mellowed by years of bottle aging, makes it a true treasure left behind from Japan's golden age of whiskey. The Suntory crest engraved on the gold cap seal and the bold "Yamazaki" ink-lettered label offer modern whiskey enthusiasts the joy of owning a piece of Japanese whiskey history itself.
