Mid-1970s distribution, Johnnie Walker Black Label Extra Special 760ml, 43% #93
Mid-1970s distribution, Johnnie Walker Black Label Extra Special 760ml, 43% #93
This bottle is a very rare vintage bottle of the globally beloved Johnnie Walker Black Label, which was distributed in the mid-1970s. With a higher alcohol content than current products and the same high quality of the original whiskey, it delivers a richer, more mellow flavor to the present day.
The bottle retains the traditional Johnnie Walker square bottle shape and features a gold neck label indicating a premium grade. It has a volume of 760ml and an alcohol content of 43%. It was bottled under the old Liquor Tax Law. The main label features a diagonally placed black label design with "EXTRA SPECIAL Old Scotch Whisky" written in the center. The Japanese label on the back confirms that the importer was Mitsubishi Corporation, based in Marunouchi, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.
Of particular note is the luxurious outer case the bottle is housed in. This case, which indicates that the bottle was sold as a luxury liquor at Matsuzakaya Department Store at the time, features a heavy texture with crocodile-like embossing. The inside is lined with a satin-like fabric, providing elegant protection for the bottle. This outer case demonstrates that it was a gift of the highest quality in Japan at the time. The case also comes with a Matsuzakaya brand card, further enhancing its rarity.
Unlike modern blends, Black Label from this era is said to have a deeper, richer, more mature, and smoky character. The aroma is a deep harmony of the rich sweetness of ripe dried fruit and sherry, with the robust peat aroma that is characteristic of Johnnie Walker. The palate is mellow, yet powerful with the strength of its 43% alcohol content, and the complex flavors of smoke, vanilla, and aged fruit linger for a long time. This is a unique and impressive bottle that embodies the history of Black Label, the king of whiskey.
As this is an old bottle, there may be some signs of a drop in the liquid level, a damaged label, or aging of the outer box. Please check the condition before purchasing this historically valuable masterpiece.
