This beautiful sake vessel is the work of Ishii Koji (1946–2019), one of Japan's leading glass artists. Ishii Koji is known for his fantastical jellyfish motif works, and by using his unique envelopment technique to trap colors and motifs within the glass, he has created a transparency and floating feeling reminiscent of the deep sea.
This sake vessel also appears to have been inspired by the jellyfish. Gold leaf and colorful glass beads are trapped within the transparent interior of the glass, blending together to create the illusion of a jellyfish's tentacles floating underwater and the sparkling light within its body. The thin white glass lines depict the graceful movements of the jellyfish and the trail of life emerging from the darkness of the deep sea, and the reflection of light further accentuates the sense of depth and floating.
Each piece is a one-of-a-kind, handmade piece, and the artist's advanced technique and artistry are evident in the shape of the glass, the solid construction of the base, and the meticulous white rim finish. Combining traditional Japanese craftsmanship with a modern sensibility, each piece is a masterpiece of high artistic value, and the accompanying box and bookmark signed by the artist guarantee that it is an authentic piece.
